Community-based Feral Pig Control Program
Your cooperation is sought in reporting sightings or presence of feral pigs, wild
deer, goats or other pest animal species.
- Feral pigs are posing the most serious threat to both agriculture and bushland areas.
- Over the past decade, there have been increased reports of feral pigs in the lower Great Southern.
- DNA studies show illegal introductions of feral pigs into bushland areas are still occurring.
A steering committee made up of farmers, Dept. of Agriculture, Local
Government, CALM, and the timber industry is coordinating the feral control
program. Significant success is being achieved by contractors employed to trap
and eradicate pigs.
How you can help.
- Please report any sightings of pigs, evidence of their activity or other feral animals
(i.e. deer, goat) to Lynn Heppell, NRM Coordinator Plantagenet Community Agriculture
Centre, P.O. Box 118, Mt Barker, WA 6324 , Phone 9851-2697, Fax 9851-2709,
Mobile 0428-531-015 or Email: lheppell@agric.wa.gov.au; Lynn will forward the information
onto the appropriate people for action.
- When reporting sightings please provide an accurate description of the location, other
relevant information, as well as your name and contact phone number. If a dead pig is
located, please forward a sample (ie a very small piece of ear) to the Plantagenet
Community Agriculture Centre who will place it in a preservative tube and forward it on to the
WA dept of Agriculture for analysis as part of DNA studies.
- Please also report information about any illicit pig or other feral animal introductions.
THANK YOU. Your assistance will ensure the success of future feral pig control programs.
